Launch of the Welsh youth consultation on suicide and help seeking behaviours
30 Nov 2010: Mind Cymru’s Positive Choices Project is proud to highlight the launch of the groundbreaking report ‘Welsh youth consultation on suicide and help seeking behaviours’ / ‘Ymgynghori ieuenctid Cymru ar hunanladdiad a cheisio help’ at the ‘Working together to reduce suicide and self-harm’ conference in Port Talbot on 29th November. This research captured the views of 195 young people across Wales about suicide and self-harm and recommends that these views be used to guide development and provision of services for young people.
Undertaken to help support the Welsh Assembly Government’s ‘National
Action Plan to Reduce Suicide and Self-harm’, the report shows that
young people understand some of the reasons why people might think about
taking their own lives. However, young people often have a negative
view of people who have or act on thoughts of suicide.
Adults were identified as a main source of help but young people felt
that they didn’t always listen. Young people were also more likely to
turn to their friends if they were having thoughts of suicide or self
harm, but were unable to identify services they could go to for
support.
Alan
Briscoe, Positive Choices Project Manager said “Today’s young people
face enormous pressures. In trying to understand how best to provide
help and support to reduce the rates of self harm and youth suicide, it
is essential that young people are asked directly for their views.”
The
report was well received by all those attending including
representatives from the statutory, private and voluntary sector. It
has also been sent to over 30 Welsh Assembly Members and Ministers who
have shown great interest and requested further copies.
The press
release of the launch prompted an article summarising the report by BBC
online news: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-11858490.
